Program Description, Eligibility and Review Criteria

Objective
The Summer School in Medical Biosciences Research & Management is an educational activity that the WHBA has established on an annual basis. The aim of this activity is to provide knowledge given by top-notch experts on the most advanced medical and biosciences research areas to two groups of participants:
  1. Senior undergraduate students of medical and biosciences background.
  2. Graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and physicians in training (residents and clinical fellows).

In addition, the Summer School aims to familiarize the students with “actual life” situations that scientists from Academia or the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industry deal with on daily basis.

Science Focus
Research broadly related to Cancer, Immunology, Cardiovascular Science, Neuroscience, Novel Technologies (Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Advanced Imaging), clinical, basic science, bioengineering or biotechnology, and public health problems.


Target Audience
  • Student applicants (undergraduate and graduate level)
At the time of application, a student applicant must be a medical or biosciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Bioengineering, Pharmacy etc.) senior undergraduate student (5th or 6th year Medical Students from Greece; 3rd or 4th year Medical Students from the US; 3rd or 4th year Biology students; 4th or 5th year Engineering and Pharmacy students) or graduate student (MSc. MPhil, PharmD or PhD).

At the time of participation in the Summer School, the student applicant may hold a BSc, MD, MSc or PhD degree (for applicants that are in their final year of undergraduate or graduate studies).

Average grade in the transcript for undergraduate and MSc students must be at least 70% of the highest possible grade (or B+). For PhD students, a MSc degree of at least 70% of the highest possible grade (or B+) and successful passing of the PhD qualifying exams are required.

  • Postgraduate applicants (postdoctoral researchers and physicians in training)
At the time of application a post-graduate applicant should actively conduct research or participate in a clinical training program (for physicians in training).

* Former WHBA Summer School participants are not eligible for application.


Financial support
40 applicants (undergraduate and graduate level, postdoctoral researchers and physicians in training) will be selected based on their academic record.

All accepted participants will have the following expenses covered:​
  • Hotel accommondation in Mani (May 14 - 20, 2023) including breakfast and lunch
  • Transfers between Athens International Airport and summer school location
  • Recreation activities in Mani

*A registration fee of $50 will be requested from selected applicants in order to participate in the Summer School

  1. Curriculum Vitae 
    For undergraduate and graduate students: 1 page
    For postdocs and physicians in training: up to 3 pages
  2. Personal Statement (up to 500 words) 
  3. Transcript of records


Application Review Criteria
To judge the merit of the application, reviewers will comment on the following criteria.  
  1. Academic record of the applicant
  2. Awards that indicate academic excellence
  3. Original peer-review publications (especially for graduate students and postgraduate trainees)
  4. Quality of the statement of purpose regarding future plans of the applicant and use of the English language
  5. Extracurricular activities that indicate outstanding service to the community or leadership skills (minor)  
Applicants should never contact the scientific board or reviewers regarding their applications. Discussing  an application or attempting to influence review outcome will constitute a conflict of interest in the review. Reviewers must notify the WHBA executive board if an applicant contacts them.
