Program Description
Current financial restrictions, long waiting lists and educational incompetency of the residency training system in Greece leads many young Medical School graduates to explore residency training opportunities abroad. Moreover, the financial constraints that the health care system in Greece experiences have compromised the quality of residency training for young doctors. Although several countries offer positions for clinical training, entering a residency program particularly in the US, as well as in high level University Hospitals of other countries is particularly challenging. Part of the reason is the prerequisite of laboratory or clinical experience or a combination of both for the top-notch residency programs. Without this element medical residency candidates are considerably less competitive. Laboratory and clinical rotations familiarize trainees with the residency training system and the general environment of top-level medical centers, which foster the physician-scientist training model that is underdeveloped in Greece. Graduates of Greek Medical Schools face many limitations in obtaining experience in top-level medical centers and research institutes due to many obstacles, such as lack of experience in laboratory work, low exposure to the clinical environment abroad, networking, and financial constraints.
In an attempt to tackle with some of these obstacles, the World Hellenic Biomedical Association has launched the RTP-CEM for outstanding medical graduates of Greek universities. The pilot phase of the program is taking place in the United States of America and is sponsored by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. Upon successful establishment, the program will be expanded to the European Union, Canada and Australia that the World Hellenic Biomedical Association has already expanded its membership.
Medical graduates of Greek universities will be matched with one of the following tracks:
  • Clinical track – 3 months clinical training (clinical observership) in a medical center.
A stipend of $15,000 will be provided to 5 successful applicants for the entire 3-months period to cover salary, health insurance up to $1,500, and hospital tuition.
  • Basic science track – 12 months basic science training in a laboratory.
A stipend of $50,000 will be provided to 3 successful applicants for the entire 12-months period to cover salary and up to $1,500 for health insurance.
  • Translational Medicine track - Combined basic science (12 months) and clinical (3 months) training in a laboratory and clinic of similar field.
A stipend of $65,000 will be provided to 2 successful applicants for the entire 15-months period to cover salary, health insurance up to $1,500, and hospital tuition (for the 3-months clinical training).
Fellowships will be submitted from the WHBA to the department that the applicant will be matched with. The Fellow will receive stipend from the department.

All successful applicants will be automatically accepted as sponsored students for the summer school in Medical & Biosciences Research & Management organized by the World Hellenic Biomedical Association.

Each accepted candidate will be designated as the "Stavros Niarchos Foundation RTP-CEM Fellow of the WHBA
". The use of this title in all written and electronic professional communications, Curriculum Vitae and websites is mandatory.
